Licensing and installation
Evaluation version limitation
The product you have downloaded to your pc is an evaluation version.
The Net Send GUI evaluation version has limited functionality (as explained in the EULA).
Licensing
Net Send GUI is licensed per workstation. A license should be purchased for each workstation which is installed with the Net Send GUI Agent and for the Console application.
The license file you receive at the end of the purchasing process fits the whole Net Send GUI kit: Net Send GUI Agent, Net Send GUI Console and the Net Send GUI Web service.
When you double click on the application, you will see a license window from which you can either open the program or add the license file.
· Click on 'Continue' to run the unregistered version of the application.
· Choose the 'Set License' option to add the license file you have received after purchasing the product.
Browse to choose the license file, and complete the process.
· The 'Buy Now' button will open the product page at the
Smart-X web site.
Installation
The program contains 3 applications: Agent, Console and Web service.
Each application is installed separately. Follow the instructions carefully to complete the process correctly.
The Net Send GUI Web Service should be installed first.
Installing the Web Service application
1. Before installing the Web Service application please read this Pre-requisits check list
1. Install the Web service application on an IIS6 / 7 Server (Windows Server 2003/8).
2. Launch the Web Service installation file.
· Read the program license conditions carefully.
· In this screen you can change the web site and virtual directory where the web service will be installed.
.gif)
· Follow the instructions displayed on the screen by the Setup wizard until you reach the 'SQL server Database install' step.
.gif)
· Choose the SQL server from the list displayed in the 'SQL Server Name' Combo box or type the SQL server's name.
· Click on 'Use SQL Server Authentication'.
· Type in the user name and password for the creation of the DB.
· Click on 'Test Connection'(Optional).
If you receive a notification of success, approve it and click on 'Next' and complete the installation.
The installation utility will create and configure a database for Net Send GUI. The user you specify in this step will only be used to create the Database.
The installation utility creates an SQL user, encrypts the password and uses it to access the Database.
Only the web service module accesses the database.
Installing the Console application
-
Install the Console application on the station from which you intend to send the messages from. (For example, the system administrator's station)
-
Open the 'Console' folder.
-
Double click the setup file.
-
Follow the instructions displayed on the screen by the Setup program until you reach the 'Web server URL' step.
.gif)
· Type the route of the Web server URL. You will need to define the web server on each client.
Installing the agent application
Install the Agent application on every workstation or TS you want to receive messages.
1. Double click the setup file.
2. Follow the instructions displayed on the screen by the Setup program until you finish the installation.
3. Type the URL of the web service.
.gif)
4. The program will run automatically after the installation.
Important Note:
Net Send GUI Agent installation utility contains a default configuration of msgsys in order to access the web service.
You can bypass the manual configuration of the web server URL address by creating a DNS record named msgsys which points to the IP address of the web server.
Continue following the instructions until you finish the installation.
The 'Web Server URL (Optional)' text box can be used to configure an alternative web server. This is useful when configuring Laptop computers which should access the web server from both within and outside the organization.
If you want to allow laptop computers to receive messages when they are also connected from outside the organization, follow these steps:
· Configure the firewall to allow HTTP/S communication from ANY station to the web server (you can use a reverse proxy for that matter as well)
· Create a DNS record in your public zone which points to the web server or the reverse proxy server on your DMZ.
· Configure the address of the public DNS entry as an optional web server URL.
· When clients are connected inside the LAN, they will use the primary URL. When clients are connected from outside the organization, the agent will detect that the primary address cannot be contacted and automatically switch to the optional URL.

When checked, Net Send GUI agent compares both computer name, user name and client name in a terminal environment. For example, if you send a message to WKS01 and a user is connected to a terminal server from that workstation, the agent that is running on the terminal server will pop up the message for that user. |
|
Default Domains |
When you have clients which are not part of the domain (such as Windows CE clients connected to a terminal server), Net Send GUI agents can compare the name of the client in any of the configured domains. This option should be used only if you have client machines which are not part of you domain. |
