XenServer 5.5 is Citrix's new open and powerful server virtualization solution.
Citrix released XenServer 5.5 as a free product in mid June 2009; this version replaces the older versions of XenServer (5.0 and 4.1)
I've been working with XenServer 5.0 for some time, so I decided to check the new features of XenServer 5.5, here goes:
First, I found the XenServer 5.5 installation pretty straightforward (took approximately 10 minutes). The next step was to install the XenCenter 5.5 on my PC (it's a small GUI client used to manage the XenServer Hypervisor). Just by browsing through the XenCenter GUI I discovered some new Citrix features, such as:
· Active Directory Integration – Gives selected AD users XenServer management privileges without providing root credentials

· Fast Cloning - Simple action ,used for rapid deployment of virtual machines

· XenCenter Search –The quickest way to find a resource or folder is to apply a simple text filter in the Resources pane by typing characters into the filter field. Only those entries containing the characters will be listed
· Enhanced Backup Enablement - Enables backup vendors to interface directly with XenServer
· Snapshots Support – Finally! Full snapshots support, the entire process took about 15 Seconds

· Historical Performance Monitoring - Enables real time monitoring of performance statistics across resource pools and graphical trending of virtual and physical machine performance.
In sum, when comparing between both free server virtualization solutions, Citrix XenServer 5.5 and VMware ESXi, Citrix is a step ahead. XenServer 5.5 offers a compelling and feature-rich alternative to VMware
